How did H.E.A.R.T. start?

The H.E.A.R.T. Program grew out of the concerns of some Houston parents of high-school age children with developmental difficulties. As they began looking for continuing education programs for their now adult children, they discovered that the choices were severely limited:

  • Enroll them in an adult daycare facility
  • Have one parent become a stay-at-home caretaker
  • Leave their children home alone
These choices were unacceptable to parents who wanted for their children what we all enjoy as adults – the opportunity to function as productive members of society and to enjoy the general sense of self-worth that comes from that.

To ensure this opportunity for the children of these parents and many others, Jane Cummins and Dr. Ross Castillo, working with Educational Programs Inspiring Communities, Inc., developed the H.E.A.R.T. Program in 2006, a client-managed entrepreneurial venture.
